Guided experience along the Tjulåleden in Ammarnäs and Vindelfjällen’s cultural landscape with a joint outdoor lunch next to Tjulån’s winding water. The hike takes place mostly through mountain birch forest, some wetland, on ridges where needed, downstream of Tjulån. The terrain is somewhat hilly and here and there some unexpected elements appear. It is good if you can count to at least 100 and why you will discover why during this hike.
During the hike
The guide tells the story about how the area was populated after the last ice age and up close you can see traps that have been in use. In Tjulån we can see both beavers and watchful fish. About halfway along the Tjulåleden we take a break at a wind shelter. Over the open fire, we cook together our packed lunch of local ingredients and enjoy the view of Tjulån’s winding water. After lunch, we walk further along the river through the cultural landscape down to Ammarnäs.
What is included: Guide. Snack, gluten- and lactose-free. (Gurpi, soft cake, coffee / tea, drink (water from Tjulån).
Own equipment: Bring your own car or take a cab (can be ordered at the grocery store, Ammarnäs Livs & Fix). It is good if you have clothes for the weather, such as a windbreaker jacket and pants, warm layers, rainwear and shoes that can withstand moisture. Mosquito repellent, seat pad, water bottle, binoculars, and your own trail mix can gild the day.
Starting point for the experience: Gathering at 09.15 at Valdemars (gravel pit) on the road to Tjulträsk about 4 km west of Ammarnäs. The entrance with the sign is on the left just above the road sign (on the right side of the road) which shows the text, “Here the public road ends” (in Swedish: “Här slutar allmän väg”). There, you will meet the guide for review and start-up.
More information: The hike is suitable for dogs but a leash is required. No transportation is included. What is Gurpi? Gurpi is a cold-smoked sausage made from minced reindeer meat that has been salted and rolled in nettle fat.
